Every so often youre lucky enough to meet somebody genuine and good natured as Phil. We broke down in Charters Towers when the alternator failed on one of our vehicles. After a drive back to Townsville to pick up a replacement, we swapped it out for a new one. Unfortunately the pulley didnt match. Now youd think thats be easy to fix but the nut wouldnt budge no matter how much rage we thew at it, and the counter nut wasnt accessible on the old pulley. Hours were spent trying to bush fix it to no avail. It was a Sunday, and no mechanic was open. I tried Phil on the off chance that hed be available.Turns out, he answered his phone. We were over there soon after and the pulley was off with a flick of his mighty impact wrench. He sent us off with best wishes and no charge for services rendered. But we we didnt get far, the old pulley was was t offset enough and rubbed on the alternator body. We headed back to Phils where he spent the better part of an hour fitting some spacers which he machined and ground down. You could tell the guy wasnt your average half asser. He checked and corrected the tolerances until he was satisfied it was perfect. When I asked what was owed, he told me not to insult him with payment.Thank you Phil, you got us back on the road, had good banter, and did it out of kindness. Well be sure to pay it forward!
